Decreasing your bandwidth usage

How to lower you bandwidth usage

If you are finding that your website bandwidth usage is increasing and you do not want to increase your hosting plan, there are a couple of things you can do to your images to ensure you are not unnecessarily paying for bandwidth:

  1. To start with, resize your images before uploading them to The Webconsole. You can do this by using any kind of image manager such as Microsoft Office Picture Manager or Adobe Photoshop, or even free image adjustment software tools like Google Photos that can be found online. The smaller the image, the less bandwidth usage it will take up, so never make your image any larger than it needs to be.
  2. Alternatively, you can resize your image as you are uploading it to The Webconsole using the options available when you upload the file.
  3. Don't resize images on content pages, as this doesn't actually change the size of the image the user has to download. Resizing your image on the page may also cause them to distort.
  4. Ensure your images are optimised depending on the type of images you are displaying, eg:
    • For photos, use JPEGs. The JPEG file type has a greater colour range to work with and will produce a more attractive picture.
    • For illustrations like maps, diagrams, or other images that require less colour variation, use GIFs. These allow for a smaller file size, and produce a clearer image when you are working with defined colours.
  5. If you have PDFs, or other files on your website that users can download, you may want to zip the files before you add them to the Image and File Manager. This will make them smaller and lower your bandwidth usage. The person downloading the file will download the zipped file, then unzip the contents onto their hard drive.
